A shocking incident was reported in Enugu State where gunmen allegedly assassinated Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya, parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu, Nsukka LGA.

According to account by multiple sources, Fr. Eya was returning from Enugu when assailants riding on a motorcycle intercepted his vehicle near the site of a Type C hospital project. The attackers reportedly shot at the tyres of his car, forcing it to stop. They then moved in and shot him multiple times at close range.

Some speculation has linked the act to kidnapping, but several reports insist the killing appears to be an assassination — the priest was alone in the vehicle, and there was no attempted abduction.

Fr. Eya is said to hail from Ugbaike in Enugu-Ezike, Igbo-Eze North LGA. As of now, neither the police nor the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka have released an official statement confirming the full details.
