Residents of Utouno village in Ngaski Local Government Area of are living in fear following reports that suspected bandits have issued a ₦100 million demand as a condition for Islamic preachers to continue religious activities in the community.
According to multiple sources, the threat was delivered through a written message addressed to community leaders. The letter reportedly warned that failure to meet the demand would attract severe consequences, throwing the entire village into panic.
The latest development comes amid heightened insecurity in parts of Kebbi and neighbouring states, especially after a recent deadly attack allegedly carried out by Lakurawa bandits in areas of Arewa South, Kangiwa Local Government Area, where more than 30 people were reportedly killed.
A resident of Utouno, who spoke anonymously due to safety concerns, described the situation as tense and frightening.
“People are deeply worried. The way the message was written shows these people are serious. Everyone is afraid of what may happen next,” the source said.
The resident added that the suspected bandits claimed in the letter that they were not afraid of security agencies or any authority, urging the community not to ignore the warning.
Reacting to the situation, the Kebbi State Government confirmed that it is aware of the threat and has begun taking preventive steps to avert any attack.
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor disclosed that the governor has ordered the immediate reinforcement of security in Utouno and surrounding communities.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police has been directed to deploy additional security personnel to the area, while other security measures are being strengthened to ensure the safety of residents and religious leaders.
As of the time of filing this report, security presence has reportedly increased in the area, but residents remain on edge, hoping the authorities can prevent another deadly incident.
