A Nigerian man has shared a heartbreaking account of how he spent almost three decades behind bars after being wrongfully linked to the death of a friend, a case he says was never properly investigated.

According to his testimony, he was arrested at the age of 19 after authorities accused him of being involved in the death of a man he was sharing a room with at the time. Despite consistently maintaining his innocence, he remained in prison for 29 years, eight months, and three days.

“My Only Crime Was Being in the Same Room”

The man explained that his only connection to the case was his presence in the same room where the deceased was later found. He said this circumstance alone led to his conviction and prolonged incarceration.

In his words:

“I went to prison at the age of 19. I spent 29 years, 8 months, and three days behind bars simply because I was sleeping in a room with a friend who later died.”

He added that no conclusive investigation was carried out to establish the actual cause of death, leaving him trapped in the justice system for nearly 30 years.

Public Reactions Trail the Story

The story, shared alongside a video, has sparked strong reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over what they described as a failure of the justice system.

One social media user wrote:

“This is so pathetic, and thank God he has gained his freedom at last.”

Another commented:

“Beyond heartbreaking. If they properly investigated the death, they would have known the cause and he would have been vindicated.”

Others questioned how such a case could linger for decades without review, calling for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s criminal justice process.

Calls for Justice Reform

The man’s experience has reignited conversations about wrongful convictions, delayed investigations, and prison reform in Nigeria, with many arguing that innocent lives continue to be destroyed due to systemic failures.

As the video continues to circulate, Nigerians are calling for accountability, compensation for victims of wrongful imprisonment, and stronger safeguards to prevent similar cases in the future.
