Fresh tension has gripped Utono community in Kebbi State’s Ngaski Local Government Area following a threatening letter allegedly sent by suspected terrorists demanding ₦100 million before entering the town.
Threat Letter Raises Alarm
The letter, reportedly written in Hausa and dated February 17, 2026, was delivered to community leaders early Thursday morning. It warned residents:
“This is not a joke. We are coming to preach. You must pay us N100 million. If you refuse, you will face the consequences and have no one to blame but yourselves. Even if you call soldiers, they cannot stop us.”
The group referenced a previous attack on Woru community in Kiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, where several people were killed after a similar warning was ignored, heightening fear in Utono.

Community Reaction
A local source, speaking anonymously, said the letter has caused widespread panic:
“People are scared. The mention of what happened in Woru has made the threat more frightening. Many families are already discussing safety plans in case anything happens.”
Residents are reportedly on high alert, with many preparing contingency plans to safeguard themselves and their property.
Government Response
Alhaji Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, confirmed the authenticity of the letter. He stated that security agencies have been deployed to Utono to prevent any attack.
Measures include:
- Reinforced security presence in and around the community and neighbouring settlements.
- Air surveillance to monitor possible militant movements.
- Coordination with local authorities to reassure residents and mitigate panic.
As of reporting, the situation remains tense, with residents urged to remain vigilant while authorities continue monitoring and securing the area.
This incident adds to growing security concerns across Kebbi and neighbouring states, where armed groups have increasingly targeted rural communities with raids, kidnappings, and extortion.
