A disturbing allegation of police extortion has sparked outrage after a Nigerian man narrated how he was allegedly robbed and threatened with death by police officers in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The man’s account, which has gone viral on social media, describes a terrifying ordeal in which officers allegedly forced him to withdraw all the money in his bank accounts—funds he said were meant to furnish a new apartment—while threatening to kill him if he resisted.

Although the claims are yet to be officially verified, the story has reignited public anger over recurring accusations of abuse, extortion, and intimidation by some members of the Nigeria Police Force.

“They First Said I Must Pay ₦6 Million”

According to the man, the incident happened in Port Harcourt when police officers double-crossed his car. He claimed the officers initially demanded ₦6 million, warning that failure to pay would have grave consequences.

He said the situation quickly escalated.

“They later decided that instead of ₦6 million, they would take everything I had,” he recounted.

The man alleged that the officers demanded access to all his bank accounts, including his savings, wiping out funds he had carefully set aside to furnish an apartment he was preparing to move into.

Forced POS Withdrawal in Port Harcourt

In his narration, the victim claimed the officers drove him to a POS stand somewhere in Port Harcourt and compelled him to make transfers from his bank accounts.

According to him, the POS operator handed the withdrawn cash directly to the officers.

“They stood there while I made the transfer,” he said, adding that the entire process was carried out under intense intimidation and fear.

“They Threatened to Kill Me”

After the forced withdrawals, the man alleged that the officers took him to another location in the city, where they threatened to kill him if he refused to cooperate further.

He said the threats left him traumatised and completely helpless.

“At that point, I was no longer thinking about the money. I just wanted to stay alive,” he said.

What We Know So Far

  • The incident allegedly occurred in Port Harcourt, Rivers State
  • The victim claims police officers demanded money and later emptied his accounts
  • He alleges he was forced to withdraw money at a POS stand
  • He claims he was threatened with death if he did not comply
  • No official response has yet been issued by the Rivers State Police Command

As of the time of reporting, the identities of the officers involved and the exact location of the POS stand have not been confirmed by authorities.

Why This Matters

Allegations like this strike at the heart of public trust in law enforcement. For many Nigerians, the story echoes long-standing fears surrounding police encounters, especially at night or during stop-and-search operations.

If proven true, the incident would amount to serious criminal offences, including armed robbery, unlawful detention, and threats to life—crimes punishable under Nigerian law.

The account also raises renewed questions about police accountability, internal oversight, and the safety of ordinary citizens during routine interactions with security agents.

What Happens Next

Human rights advocates and social media users are calling on the Rivers State Police Command to urgently investigate the allegation. Many have urged the victim to file a formal complaint, provide evidence such as bank alerts or POS transaction records, and seek legal redress.

Until an official investigation is concluded, the claims remain allegations. However, the incident has once again amplified calls for stronger safeguards to protect Nigerians from abuse by those entrusted with enforcing the law.
