Public outrage has trailed reports that Maryam Sanda, convicted in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, is among the 175 inmates allegedly pardoned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Sanda’s inclusion, allegedly influenced by “connections,” has drawn sharp criticism, particularly from Northern communities, who view her crime as one of the most brutal domestic tragedies in recent memory.

Sanda was sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of killing Bello during a domestic altercation at their home in Abuja in November 2017.

The tragic incident reportedly began when Sanda confronted her husband after discovering suggestive photos on his phone. The confrontation escalated into violence, leading to Bello’s fatal stabbing.

Many Nigerians have described the rumored pardon as “a slap in the face of justice,” urging the federal government to clarify the situation.
