The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the driver of the Lexus SUV conveying Nigerian-British boxing star Anthony Joshua is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the fatal road accident that occurred on Monday.

The crash, which happened along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both described as close associates of the boxer, while Anthony Joshua sustained injuries and was hospitalised.

What Happened

According to reports, the accident occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. in front of Sinoma, before Danco, along the busy expressway. The Lexus Jeep (registration number KRD 850 HN) reportedly collided with a stationary truck.

Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, indicated that the SUV was over-speeding and wrongfully overtook from the right-hand side before crashing into the parked vehicle.

Tyre Burst, Loss of Control

Further details from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) revealed that the front passenger-side tyre burst due to excessive speed, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi said:

“From the preliminary investigation that was conducted, there was definitely over-speeding on the part of the SUV Anthony Joshua was travelling in. In the course of that, the front tyre on the passenger side burst.

That led to loss of control before the vehicle swerved and rammed into the stationary truck. There was excessive speed.”

Police Action

Confirming the development on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the driver is currently being held while investigations continue.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” Babaseyi stated.

Medical Response

Anthony Joshua was rushed to Duchess International Hospital, Lagos, where he received medical attention. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Hospital Morgue, Sagamu.

Ongoing Investigation

The police have assured the public that a thorough and transparent investigation is underway to determine full responsibility for the crash.

Authorities say further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
