A dramatic dowry contest in South Sudan has ended with businessman Thon Chol Riak officially marrying Atong Aguto Monyroor after outbidding a rival suitor with a jaw-dropping offer that reportedly included $77,000 in cash, 297 cows, and several plots of land.

The lavish wedding ceremony was held on February 1, 2026, following weeks of intense national attention as details of the competing dowry offers trended across social media and local platforms.

How the Dowry Competition Started

The highly-publicised contest reportedly began in late December 2025, when two influential families publicly expressed interest in Atong’s hand in marriage, triggering a rare and competitive negotiation process deeply rooted in Dinka cultural tradition.

In Dinka culture, marriage is viewed as a union between families and clans, with cattle symbolising honour, wealth, status, and long-term family commitment.

Rival Suitor’s Offer

One of the suitors, Mabior Abit Biar, reportedly backed by the Awulian community, presented an offer said to include:

  • 158 cows
  • 161 goats
  • Dozens of sheep
  • Two vehicles
  • A bungalow in town
  • Seven plots of land in Juba
  • Around $25,000 cash

Winning Offer That Sealed the Marriage

However, the Abang community, representing Thon Chol Riak, eventually clinched the marriage with a much larger commitment, reportedly including:

  • 297 cows
  • $77,000 cash
  • Landed properties
  • Additional assets
  • Educational sponsorships for two members of the bride’s family

An official involved in the negotiations reportedly said:

“The offers were evaluated according to tradition, family standing and long-term commitments.”

Massive Reactions Online

The scale of the bride price has sparked massive debate across South Sudan and beyond.

While some celebrated it as a proud display of cultural heritage, others criticised it for increasing financial pressure on marriage and turning dowry into a competition of wealth.

Despite the mixed reactions, both families proceeded with the union, bringing an end to one of the most talked-about dowry negotiations in recent times.
