Two candidates preparing for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination have escaped after being kidnapped by gunmen along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue State.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the development on Friday, adding that one suspect has also been arrested in connection with the attack.
The victims were among passengers abducted on Wednesday night when armed men ambushed a Benue Links commercial bus in Otukpo Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson Udeme Edet said investigations identified the vehicle as a Toyota Hiace bus owned by Benue Links.
She explained that multiple tactical teams, including the Anti Kidnapping Unit, have been deployed to track the abductors and rescue the remaining victims.
According to the command, security operatives are also working with other agencies to strengthen ongoing rescue operations.
Authorities said efforts are being intensified to ensure the safe return of everyone still in captivity.
Police further clarified that earlier reports claiming all passengers were UTME candidates were inaccurate.
They stated that while some of those on board were travelling for the examination, not every passenger was a candidate.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over road security in parts of Benue State, especially as students and travellers move during the examination period.
