There was tension in Edo State last Friday after a family reportedly threatened to stop the burial of their loved one after discovering that her eyes were missing when her body was brought out from the mortuary.
According to accounts shared online, the family had gone to collect the remains on the day scheduled for the funeral when they noticed the condition of the corpse.
The discovery reportedly triggered heated arguments at the mortuary, with relatives demanding an explanation from attendants.
A mortuary worker was said to have explained that the eyes were affected after chemicals were used during preservation and preparation of the body.
However, family members initially rejected the explanation and insisted that the deceased should be returned in the same complete condition in which she was received.
The disagreement caused delays and raised fears that the funeral ceremony might be cancelled.
To resolve the matter, a medical doctor was reportedly invited by the family to examine the corpse.
After conducting an inspection, the doctor allegedly explained that the condition of the eyes may have resulted from embalming chemicals and the long period the body had remained in storage.
Reports indicated that the deceased had spent about nine months in the mortuary.
Following the medical explanation, the family reportedly agreed to proceed with the burial arrangements.
The unusual incident has since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians debating mortuary standards and the emotional strain families face during funeral preparations.
