IMG 9543 The NaijaWide NewsThe Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has made a bold political declaration ahead of the upcoming FCT Area Council elections, stating clearly that he will only support candidates aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s vision.

His remarks have already sparked conversations about loyalty, political strategy, and the influence of federal officials in local government elections.

Wike Speaks at Senator’s 60th Birthday in Abuja

The FCT Minister made the statement on Saturday, February 14, 2026, during the 60th birthday celebration of Sandy Onor in Abuja.

Addressing guests at the high-profile gathering, Wike openly declared his position regarding the February 21 FCT Area Council elections.

According to him:

“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win.

It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand.”

“Party Doesn’t Matter” – Alignment Is Key

Wike emphasized that his support will not be determined by political party lines. Instead, his primary focus is on whether candidates align with President Tinubu’s policies and development agenda for the FCT.

This position signals a strategic approach that prioritizes loyalty to the president’s vision over partisan considerations.

FCT Area Council Elections: What’s at Stake?

The FCT Area Council elections, scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, will determine councillors and chairpersons across the six area councils in Abuja.

These local government officials play critical roles in:

  • Community development
  • Primary healthcare administration
  • Sanitation and infrastructure
  • Grassroots governance

With several major political parties in the race, voters are preparing to choose leaders who will shape local governance in Nigeria’s capital territory.

Political Tensions Expected to Rise

Wike’s declaration is expected to intensify political debates in the FCT, particularly around:

  • Federal influence in local elections
  • Political loyalty and alignment
  • The balance of power in grassroots governance

Observers note that the minister’s strong stance could significantly impact campaign strategies in the days leading up to the poll.

The Bigger Political Picture

As the election date draws closer, Wike’s position underscores the growing importance of political alignment within Nigeria’s evolving power structure.

Whether his endorsement strategy will influence the outcome remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the FCT council election just became even more politically charged.
