The Lagos State Police Command has rolled out a 24-hour anti-crime patrol along the coastal road, aiming to safeguard commuters, construction sites, and public infrastructure.
The initiative was announced by Olohundare Jimoh, the state Commissioner of Police, during a show of force along the corridor on Thursday. Jimoh explained that the patrols are intended to prevent crimes such as snatching, robbery, vandalism, and theft, particularly in vulnerable areas along the newly opened road.
Strong Police Presence Yields Results
When the road opened in December 2025, 50 patrol teams of five officers each were deployed to key intersections, black spots, and other high-risk locations. Jimoh noted that the strong police presence had so far prevented any incidents of snatching, kidnapping, or robbery.
Building on this success, the command has now introduced four mobile patrol teams operating round the clock. These units will:
- Cover gaps between fixed posts.
- Monitor vandalism-prone areas.
- Conduct discreet investigations to apprehend offenders.
- Protect commuters, contractor staff, and construction equipment.
- Ensure road facilities such as lighting, barriers, and fencing remain intact.
Collaboration with Government Agencies
The initiative is supported by the David Umahi and the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, highlighting inter-agency collaboration to boost public safety. Patrols will also extend to adjoining areas like Kuramo Junction and the Ajah–Lekki corridor, identified as potential hotspots.
Federal Works Ministry Backs Patrols
Olufemi Dare, Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, commended the police intervention. He highlighted previous concerns about theft of manhole covers, steel signs, and fencing along the coastal road, emphasizing that the additional patrol vehicles will help curb vandalism and criminal activity.
Jimoh assured residents, commuters, and businesses that the patrol teams would be continuously supervised to guarantee swift responses to threats, reinforcing Lagos as a safe and secure environment.
This move comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen urban security and protect both lives and property along major transport corridors in the state.
