Fear and tension have taken over Ikoyi-Ile, a rural community in Oyo State, following reports that suspected bandits have issued direct threats to attack the town.

The development comes barely days after a deadly assault at Old Oyo National Park, Oloka village axis, where gunmen reportedly killed five people, heightening fears of a spreading security crisis in Oriire Local Government Area.

Threat Letters Spark Widespread Panic

Residents disclosed that fear spread rapidly after two handwritten notes allegedly linked to bandits were found at different locations in the town.

One of the notes, written in Yoruba and titled “Lati Odo Bandit” (From the Bandits), warned residents that the attackers would arrive on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, urging them to “prepare” and comply with demands.

A rough translation of the message suggests an explicit threat of violence if residents fail to cooperate.

A second note, written in English, read in part:

“Bandit information. See, now, Three days we work for you… Wait for us.”

Although the authenticity of the notes has not been independently verified, their content has triggered anxiety across the community.

Residents on Edge, Security Tightened

Locals reported staying indoors, restricting night movement, and reinforcing security around homes and businesses. Community vigilante groups have also increased patrols while appealing for urgent government intervention.

Police Confirm Awareness, Begin Probe

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed awareness of the situation.

Speaking on the development, Police Public Relations Officer Ayanlade Olayinka said investigations were already underway despite the absence of a formal complaint.

“We have not received the letter officially, but investigations have commenced immediately after it was brought to our attention,” he said.

“The person who discovered the note is currently being debriefed, and a full-scale investigation has been launched to determine its origin and intent.”

Growing Security Concerns in Oriire LGA

Security observers note that Oriire Local Government Area — which hosts Ikoyi-Ile and parts of Old Oyo National Park — has increasingly witnessed violent criminal activity in recent months, raising alarm over the safety of surrounding rural communities.

Calls for Urgent Government Action

Traditional leaders, residents, and local vigilante groups have jointly called on the Oyo State Government and security agencies to intensify patrols, deploy intelligence assets, and prevent a repeat of last week’s deadly attack.

As of now, fear remains palpable in Ikoyi-Ile, with residents hoping authorities will act swiftly to avert a potential tragedy.
