A woman has sparked massive outrage online after alleging that she was sacked from her job just one day after burying her husband.

In a viral video currently making rounds on social media, the visibly emotional woman said she suffered a breakdown at work shortly after her husband’s death and was asked by her workplace to go home.

“I Missed Work for Just One Day”

According to her, she only stayed away from work for one day to attend her husband’s burial.

However, she claimed she was later informed that her employment had been terminated because she was absent without approval.

“My husband just died. I had to bury him,” she said tearfully in the clip.

Employer Allegedly Cited “Policy is Policy”

The woman further alleged that the company refused to make any exception, insisting that “policy is policy.”

She added that her status as a contract/temporary worker was used as part of the justification for the termination.

Social Media Reacts

The video has triggered heavy backlash online, with many Nigerians describing the employer’s decision as cruel and heartless.

Some social media users, including HR professionals, also advised her to seek legal help, noting that depending on labour laws, it could be a case of wrongful termination.

Conversation on Workers’ Rights Resurfaces

The incident has now reignited discussions around:

  • Bereavement leave

  • Workers’ rights in Nigeria

  • Contract staff protection

  • Whether companies should be legally forced to show compassion
