A 21-year-old U.S. Marine, Lance Corporal Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, has been declared dead after falling overboard from the USS Iwo Jima in the Caribbean Sea, the U.S. Marine Corps has confirmed.

Tragic Incident at Sea

According to official statements, Oforah, a Florida native of Nigerian descent, went into the water on February 7, 2026, while aboard the amphibious assault ship during routine operations. Despite a major three-day search and rescue effort involving five Navy ships and 10 aircraft, he was not found alive and was pronounced dead on February 10.

Search and Rescue Effort

The search included multiple U.S. Navy vessels, an inflatable rescue boat, and aircraft from the Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force. The Marine Corps later suspended the operation and declared him deceased after the exhaustive 72-hour effort.

Marine Service and Deployment

Oforah was an infantry rifleman with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and deployed with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit at the time of the incident. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 2023 and completed training in early 2024.

Statement from Marine Corps

In a statement, the Marine Corps expressed deep condolences to Oforah’s family, saying his loss is “deeply felt” across the service and that his dedicated service “will not be forgotten.”

Context of the Deployment

The USS Iwo Jima has been part of an increased U.S. military presence in the Caribbean linked to Operation Southern Spear, a multi-branch campaign targeting drug trafficking and security threats in the region. Oforah’s death is the first publicly reported U.S. military fatality connected to the ongoing operation.

As at the latest reports, the circumstances of how he fell overboard are still under formal military investigation.
