Activist and former presidential candidate Omotele Sowere has reacted strongly to the removal of former Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun describing him as “the worst police IG in recent times.”
Egbetokun’s exit comes after his resignation was accepted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who subsequently appointed Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
The development has triggered fresh debates across the country over leadership, accountability, and long-awaited reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
Sowore: “That’s the Day I Swore to Fight Him”
Reacting to the leadership change, Sowore did not hold back in his criticism of Egbetokun’s tenure.
According to him, his issues with the former police chief began when protesters were arrested during demonstrations against bad governance. He also referenced the controversial prosecution of minors on serious charges, which sparked nationwide outrage at the time.
“We removed Egbetokun, and I must tell you this. I started having a problem with Egbetokun when he arrested people who were protesting bad governance and even charged 10-year-olds for treason in this country. That’s the day I swore that I must fight this guy to finish.”
Sowore further claimed that he had repeatedly warned President Tinubu against extending Egbetokun’s tenure, describing any such move as a grave political mistake.
“When his tenure was extended, even before it was extended, I had been warning Tinubu not to extend it. This guy is the worst police IG in recent times,” he emphasized.
Leadership Change Sparks Reform Debate
With Tunji Disu now serving as Acting IGP, attention has shifted to whether the new leadership will usher in meaningful reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
Many Nigerians are closely watching to see if the transition will lead to:
- Improved professionalism within the force
- Greater respect for citizens’ rights
- Reduced allegations of police brutality
- Enhanced public trust and accountability
The Nigeria Police Force has faced sustained criticism in recent years over its handling of protests, human rights concerns, and internal discipline.
