Residents of Omugo community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have abandoned their homes following a series of attacks by suspected bandits, leaving the once active area largely deserted.
Reports indicate that many families fled after repeated incidents of violence, with only a few animals seen in the community as fear continues to spread among locals.
The latest crisis followed an attack on a church in the area, where gunmen abducted eight worshippers, including the wife of the presiding pastor. Three of the victims later escaped, while the remaining captives are still being held.
Sources within the community said the attackers demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion for the release of those still in captivity. Residents reportedly raised ₦1 million, but the amount was rejected.
The situation worsened after another attack in nearby Oro Ago, where a local vigilante identified as Baba Ibeji was killed, while his younger brother sustained injuries.
In a separate incident, gunmen broke into a Point of Sale shop located opposite the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps divisional office. The attackers also fired shots at the NSCDC facility, although no casualties were reported.
Earlier attacks in the area include an ambush along the Oro Ago and Oke Ayan road, where two local hunters providing escort services were killed by armed men.
Tension increased again on Saturday after reports emerged that bandits were regrouping to launch another attack on the community.
Security agencies in the area have since been placed on high alert in an effort to prevent further violence and protect residents.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from authorities regarding the latest developments.
