The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the sudden death of a 53-year-old lecturer who reportedly collapsed while visiting a young woman in Minna, the Niger State capital, an incident that has raised public concern and prompted a full-scale police investigation.

The deceased, identified as Abdulfatai Aiyede, was said to be a lecturer based in Bida who travelled to Minna on Monday, January 27, 2026. According to police accounts, his death occurred during a private visit to the residence of a 25-year-old nursing student, identified as Stella Joseph.

What Happened During the Visit

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said the matter was reported to the police at about 10:00 a.m. on the same day.

Preliminary findings indicate that Aiyede visited Joseph at her home, where she reportedly served him a meal. Shortly after eating, the lecturer allegedly began to convulse and then collapsed inside the house.

Witness accounts, according to police, suggest that the incident happened suddenly, throwing the household into panic as attempts were made to save him.

Rushed to Hospital, Confirmed Dead

Following his collapse, the lecturer was rushed to the General Hospital in Minna for urgent medical attention. However, doctors later confirmed that he had died.

At this stage, authorities say the exact cause of the convulsion and subsequent death remains unknown, and no conclusions have been drawn pending medical findings.

Police Detain Woman, Begin Investigation

The Niger State Police Command confirmed that Stella Joseph has been taken into custody as part of the investigation. The police were quick to clarify that her arrest is procedural and does not imply guilt.

“The arrest is to enable a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death,” Abiodun said.

He added that the body of the deceased has been deposited for medical examination, with an autopsy and other tests expected to determine the precise cause of death.
