The Federal Government has announced plans to phase out the Common Entrance Examination for admission into junior secondary school and replace it with a new student tracking system known as the Learner Identification Number.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Lagos, explaining that the new system will monitor the academic progress of students from primary school through secondary school.
According to the minister, the Common Entrance Examination will be gradually removed and replaced with Continuous Assessment, a method that evaluates students based on their performance throughout their years in primary school.
He said the Continuous Assessment system will allow schools to track a student’s academic record from Primary One, making the transition to secondary school easier and more transparent.
Alausa explained that the Learner Identification Number will make it possible for students to carry their academic records with them even if they change schools.
He noted that the new approach is expected to address existing challenges in the education system, especially the problem of students failing to move from primary school to secondary school.
The minister added that the reform is part of ongoing efforts by the government to improve the quality of education and ensure proper monitoring of students’ academic progress across the country.
